The Night Everything Gets Honest: Beltane and the Full Moon in Scorpio

There are some days on the wheel of the year that feel like they're running on a different kind of electricity. Today is one of them.
May 1st is Beltane — one of the great fire festivals of the Celtic calendar, a day that practically hums with life force energy. And this year, it falls on a Full Moon in Scorpio. If you felt something shift when you woke up this morning, or noticed a particular intensity in the air, you weren't imagining it. You were picking up on something real.

Beltane: When Life Refuses to Hold Back
Beltane marks the midpoint between the spring equinox and the summer solstice — a cross-quarter day, sitting exactly halfway between the two. It's the moment the wheel tips fully into the light half of the year.
In the old Celtic world, Beltane was a festival of fire and fertility in the broadest possible sense — not just crops and cattle (though yes, those too), but the fertility of ideas, of creativity, of desire. Great bonfires were lit on the hilltops. People danced. Cattle were driven between the flames for protection. The dew collected on May morning was said to bestow beauty and luck on whoever touched it. Hawthorn blossomed. The May Queen was crowned. The Green Man stirred.
What all of these traditions share is a single underlying truth: life is erupting, and we are supposed to participate in that.
Beltane is not a festival for the cautious. It's not a festival for people who have dimmed themselves down to something more manageable. It is, if anything, an invitation to show up fully — in your body, in your desire, in your joy. The veil between worlds is thin at Beltane (second only to Samhain), and the energy is electric and generous. The fae are out. The ancestors are close. And the universe is paying attention.
The Full Moon in Scorpio: Where the Light Goes Deep
If Beltane is fire, the Full Moon in Scorpio is the deep water underneath.
Scorpio is not a casual sign. It doesn't do surfaces. It rules transformation, depth, the shadow, the hidden — all the things we tend to keep in the dark because they feel too large or too complicated or too honest. Pluto-ruled and intensely psychic, Scorpio energy has a way of bringing things up whether we planned for it or not. Secrets surface. Emotions that have been quietly composting in the basement of your psyche ask to be acknowledged. The thing you've been avoiding tends to find you.
A Full Moon is always a moment of culmination and illumination — the sun and moon in direct opposition, the light turned all the way up. Under a Scorpio Full Moon, that light gets aimed somewhere specific: at whatever you've been pretending isn't there.
This is not inherently dark or scary, even though Scorpio has a reputation. It's just honest. Scorpio energy is the energy of transformation, and transformation requires looking clearly at what is — before you can move into what could be.
What Happens When You Put Both of Them Together
Here is where it gets interesting.
Beltane says: desire is sacred. Life is good. Step into the fire.
The Scorpio Full Moon says: But what do you actually want? Not the acceptable version. The real one.
These two energies are not in conflict — they're doing something rarer and more useful. They're creating conditions for radical honesty about your own life force.
You can't fully celebrate Beltane if you're only willing to celebrate the sanitized version of yourself. The fire doesn't work that way. It burns through pretense. And this year, with a Scorpio Full Moon lighting up the sky at exactly the same moment, there's an invitation to be genuinely honest about what you're welcoming into your life — and what you need to release in order to make room for it.
Think of it this way: Beltane plants seeds in fire, not soil. What you claim on Beltane, you're claiming with intention and heat. The Scorpio Full Moon asks you to make sure that what you're planting is actually yours — not what you think you should want, not what looks good from the outside, but what your deepest self has been quietly asking for.
How to Work With This Energy Today
You don't have to do a formal ritual (though if you love ritual, this is a spectacular night for it). What matters is showing up intentionally.
Light a candle. Even a small one. Beltane is a fire festival — flame carries the energy of the day. Let it burn while you think or journal or sit quietly.
Go outside, if you can. Feel the May air. Look up at the moon. Beltane has always been celebrated outdoors because it's about the living world. The hawthorn is blooming, the days are long. Notice it.
Ask yourself the Scorpio question. What have I been avoiding? What do I want that I haven't admitted out loud yet? What do I need to release before I can really step into this next season of my life? Write it down. The Scorpio Full Moon is an exceptional night for releasing what no longer serves — write it down and burn it (safely), or simply say it out loud and mean it.
State what you're calling in. Beltane energy is generous and generative. After you've cleared the space, fill it with intention. What do you want to grow? Say it with the same directness Scorpio requires. Not "I'd like more abundance, maybe, if that's okay" — but the real thing, said clearly, to whatever you believe is listening.
Leave an offering. A small dish of milk and honey on the doorstep for the fae, a flower tucked into the earth, a moment of genuine gratitude said out loud. The tradition of Beltane offerings is rooted in reciprocity — acknowledging that we are in relationship with the living world, not just passing through it.
A Note on Today
I've written before about synchronicity — about the way the universe has a tendency to underline things when it wants your attention. Beltane falling on a Full Moon in Scorpio is that kind of underlining. It doesn't happen every year. Today is, in the truest sense, a rare confluence — the fire festival of desire and life meeting the moon that refuses to let you stay shallow.
Whatever you've been sitting on, whatever you've been waiting for permission to want — today is a good day to let it surface. The fire is already lit. The moon is full. The veil is thin.
Step into it.
How are you celebrating Beltane this year? I'd love to hear in the comments — and if you're drawn to work with the wheel of the year more intentionally, I have tools for that in the Etsy shop. 🐦🔥
